The experience of an exchange is enriching for anyone, whether to learn or practice a new language, increase the network, acquire new skills, get to know new cultures and even make new friends.

But if you want to experience all of this with even more intensity, doing an exchange with work can give you a much more immersive trip and take you not only to classrooms abroad, but also insert you directly into society, with common jobs but that can give you unforgettable experiences and help a lot in practicing another language.

Exchange trips with work are aimed at those looking to go abroad to improve their career, learn a new language and have an immersion in another culture with work experience for the purpose of socialization and language practice. Among the most common vacancies are cleaning assistant, waiter and nanny.

The most common countries for this type of trip are Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, which are part of the favorite destinations of Brazilians who do exchange programs to practice their English.

We spoke with the exchange specialist Juliana Almeida to answer the main questions about this type of business trip. Look:

1- How much does a work exchange trip cost?

From 30,000 Reais, in addition to the course, financial proof will be required and each country has different rules regarding this.

2- Is it possible to pay for the exchange with work?

No, you have to prepay for the trip. Students who choose to work can usually work 20 hours a week, enough to help with their budget during the course, but it is not possible to pay for the trip with work.

3- Which areas are usually available job openings?

This type of exchange most often brings incredible experiences that are totally different from what the student is used to. A student who does not know how to speak English will work as a cleaner, nanny, waiter and the like and will certainly end the exchange with valid lessons for any career they want to follow.

4- How is the remuneration in exchange work?

The focus in this type of program cannot be on remuneration, but on studies, but remuneration in most countries is per hour, approximately 10.50 Euros in Ireland, 17 dollars in New Zealand and 20 dollars in Australia. These are the values of the minimum wage per hour but it is possible to receive more depending on the work.

5- The exchange agencies that get the job for the student?

The agency assists and guides you through the entire process of getting a job, but it does not guarantee employment, no agency can do that by law. But it is necessary to have a separate amount for the trip, because in any case the visa is a student visa and immigration understands that the person needs to already have money to maintain himself if he does not get a job. But the vast majority do!

6- Is it possible to pay for the course during the exchange?

It is not possible, as one of the main documents for applying for a visa is the letter from the school or university stating that the course has already been fully paid for.
